Here are some requirements for firefighter that you might like to know about.

Part-Paid Volunteer Firefighter

Definition: Under direction, performs fire suppression, fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities; does related work as required; reports to Lieutenant or Captain as per standard operating procedure.

Typical Tasks: (illustrative only)

• Responds to fire, rescue and public service alarms
• Lays and connects hose, holds nozzle and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders
• Uses equipment such as fire extinguishers, pry bars, hooks, ropes, arial ladders, power tools, self-contained breathing apparatus during training and fire suppression
• Performs salvage operations such as covering exposed furniture and removing excess water and debris
• Administers emergency aid to sick and injured persons including techniques to restore cardio-pulmonary functions
• Determines the need for and performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property such as maintaining and testing fire hose, cleaning and polishing apparatus, making minor repairs to equipment, and cleaning and maintaining the building
• Participates in formal classroom and on-the-job training in modern firefighting methods and techniques, fire prevention procedures, emergency victim care, etc.
• Give public education presentations on fire safety throughout the community
• Maintains records and prepares reports
• Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements: Geographical knowledge of the township and the location of important buildings or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge; ability to learn the principles and practices of firefighting; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; strong customer service skills; good judgement; mechanical aptitude. Must be able to respond to calls a few nights a week.

Required Certificates and Licenses: Must be willing to pursue firefighter certification, with certification process completed by no later than one year from date of hire. Must obtain Hazardous Materials - Operations Level certification. Must have an Ohio Driver's License and a vehicle that is certifiable by the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office as a public safety vehicle.
