The Number One Cause of Residential Fires

Posted on Jul 30, 2014

Unattended cooking is the number one cause of residential fires in the United States today.

During a recent five-year period, US fire departments responded to an average of about 156,600 fires per year involving cooking equipment, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Unfortunately, Washington Township also has experienced its share. In September 2013, a condominium fire caused by unattended cooking resulted in one death, the displacement of nine familes, and more than $700,000 in damage.

Nationally, cooking-related fires caused 470 deaths, 5,390 injuries and $1 billion in direct property damage. Cooking caused 43 percent of reported home fires, 16 percent of home fire deaths, 38 percent of home fire injuries, and 12 percent of the direct property damage from home fires in 2011.
