Smoke Alarm Reminder

Find our smoke alarm infographic here.

Remember to change your smoke alarm batteries in the spring and fall at the beginning and end of daylight savings time.

It's also important to check or replace your smoke alarms. Properly placed and maintained smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.

  • Place a smoke detector in every bedroom, in the hallways outside of the sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Choose smoke detectors that are wired and interconnected, or battery powered units that communicate with each other so that when one detector alarms, they will sound throughout your entire home.
  • Smoke alarms do not last forever, so replace them every ten years
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and vacuum dust from inside at least once per year.
  • To be safest at night, when most home fires occur, sleep with bedroom doors closed to prevent the spread of smoke and fire.
  • Develop an escape plan with two ways out and make sure every family member knows what to do and where to meet outside if the alarm sounds.
  • Take time to practice a primary and secondary escape plan with the entire family.
  • If you have questions, please contact the Washington Township Fire Department at 433-3083
