Andrea Hansgen Wins Second Annual Terry Blair Scholarship

Posted on May 16, 2016

The second annual Terry Blair Scholarship has been awarded to a recent Centerville High School graduate who already has shown an interest in the leadership and community service that Terry Blair epitomized.

Scholarship recipient Andrea Hansgen has organized the spirit chain fundraiser and the Holiday Aid Canned Food Drive at Centerville High School, volunteered for the House of Bread, and participated in activities that have benefitted Dayton Children’s Hospital and St. Vincent DePaul.

Her government and leadership activities include student council class officer, Youth in Government Day, Buckeye Girls State, and two local political campaigns. Besides appearing extensively in community theater and participating in the Coeds Dance team, Poetry Club and Concert Choir, Andrea is a National Honor Society member and employed by St. Leonard Retirement Community.

The scholarship honors Terry Blair who died in July 2014 while representing Ohio’s 42nd district in the Ohio General Assembly. Blair also served 21 years as a Washington Township trustee, completing eight terms as president and winning election six times.

Terry’s widow Judy and the Blair family established the $1,000 scholarship which was presented at a spring meeting of the Washington Township Board of Trustees. The scholarship is administered by Noon Optimists of Centerville.

“Terry was a champion of good government who believed deeply that local government should always be accountable to its citizens,” said Township Administrator Jesse Lightle, who presented the scholarship. Blair advocated inter-governmental cooperation and held the township to high standards that included outstanding customer service and cost-effective service delivery.
