Recreation Department Wins Grant

Grant Funds Recycling at Countryside Park

A recycling and litter prevention initiative for the Washington Township Recreation Department has gotten a kick-start with a $12,112 Recycling Incentive Grant from the Montgomery County Solid Waste District.

The matching grant will help pay for 21 recycling containers to be positioned throughout all recreation facilities and Countryside Park. Revenue from the Recreation Levy funds 30 percent of the $17,302 project cost.

“New containers and better ways to dispose of trash are only part of the grant’s impact,” said Mark Metzger, recreation facilities director. “We’ll also be undertaking green living educational programs for all ages that focus on the three Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – and that provide information about the environment and conserving natural resources.” Many will be offered with the Solid Waste District and Five Rivers MetroParks.

The recreation department began a facility-wide green energy initiative last year as part of its five-year plan. New LED lights were installed in the Rec Center natatorium and Rec West mini gym, making the spaces brighter and more cost efficient and environmentally friendly.
