Visual Improvement Program
Washington Township, Ohio
3:30PM
VIP members present: Marlene Tiernan, Chairperson; Sarah Stanton, Co-Chairperson; Gordon Dodane; Mabel Leyes; Bob Harrington; Cynthia Fraley. Township staff member present: Mike Wanamaker.
Leyes moved to accept last month’s minutes as written. Harrington seconded. The motion was passed.
It was mentioned that Sandy Spees was still in the hospital. There is no October invoice from her, we may still owe her money.
Members voted for Marlene Tiernan to remain Chairperson, and Sarah Stanton to remain Co-Chairperson for 2007. Harrington made the motion, Leyes seconded. The vote was unanimous, with all 6 members present approving.
Leyes discussed citizen complaints about the beautification signs being too small to see from the road. It was decided that Mike Wanamaker would look into getting bigger signs. Committee discussed whether they gave out too many or too few signs each month. 21 signs were given out in 2006, less than 2 a month. There was a discussion on how many signs a month should be given out—maybe, 3 a month, for a total of 36. It was then suggested that VIP members take more time going out and finding attractive properties.
Stanton moved to find larger signs. Tiernan seconded. The motion was passed.
Seedling project was tabled.
The Hithergreen project for Arbor Day is still in progress. The committee is looking at a gazebo. They are about $1,500 on the internet. It was discussed that a plaque be placed in the garden that read “designed by Sandy Spees”.
The Bus Stop Enhancement Project will be re-bid at a later date. Stanton moved to have the type of shelter, roof and bench re-evaluated. Harrington seconded. The motion passed.
Yanks Park will no longer have flowers as part of the bed design. The committee questioned the status of Sandy Spees’ flower order from Berns. Someone needs to check with Ann Hughes at Master Gardeners for names of people who can help next year with planting.
A replacement for Sandy Spees’ position was discussed. It was suggested that the Township advertise and interview for Sandy Spees’ position, or possibly ask Yvonne Dunphe if she knows anyone.
Harrington mentioned a request from one of the Beautification Award winners, Mr. Weaver, to have his award changed from Weaver Residence to Weaver /Chamberlain Residence.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Sarah Stanton
