Trash Collection

Holiday Schedule          Letter of Understanding with Trash Haulers

If you live in unincorporated Washington Township and your trash hauler has not provided one of the services detailed on this page, call the township at 433-0152.

Residents Can Expect These Minimum Trash Collection Services

All four trash haulers operating in unincorporated Washington Township have signed a Letter of Understanding which indicates their willingness to meet certain performance standards set forth by the township.

As a result, Washington Township lends "preferred provider" status to these haulers who operate within the unincorporated township:

  • Waste Management
  • Rumpke Waste Removal and Recycling
  • Allied Waste Systems (formerly Dempsey Waste).

Trash haulers who sign the Letter of Understanding have agreed to:

  • Provide a commingled curbside recycling program for the collection of glass, metal and aluminum cans, and plastic waste items.
  • Provide one bulky item pickup per calendar year, at no additional charge, upon customer request. The pickup will be limited to three bulky items. (Additional bulky item pickups are offered on a fee basis set by individual haulers.)
  • Support the Township's lawn clipping suppresion program by furnishing 32-gallon plastic bags, at a cost of up to $1.25 per bag (subject to change), to residents electing to have clippings removed.
  • Pick up brush, branches and tree limbs tied in bundles no longer than four feet in length and two feet in diameter, with no single limb wider than two inches.

Although the three trash haulers servicing unincorporated Washington Township operate without governmental intervention, the Township only refers residents to trash haulers who meet the standards. This approach keeps the free market system intact while providing an incentive for all trash haulers to maintain specific levels of service.

The Letter of Understanding, in effect since 1992, was established in response to citizen concern over solid waste disposal. In a November 1990 survey conducted by the Township, residents said they believed solid waste was the number one issue facing the community.

Holiday Trash Pickup Schedules

Everybody's routine seems to change when there's a holiday -- and it's no different with trash.

Normal trash pickup schedules can change, depending on when the holiday falls. So that you'll know what to expect on those weeks, we've collected information for both residents of unincorporated Washington Township and the City of Centerville.

Unincorporated Washington Township

Service is provided by three private trash haulers: Waste Management, Rumpke Waste Removal and Recycling, and Allied Waste Systems (formerly Dempsey Waste).

Trash haulers each observe six holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a week day, then trash pickup is delayed one day, with the final pickup day being Saturday. This applies to all homes originally scheduled for pickup either on the holiday itself or later in the week.

For instance, if a holiday falls on a Wednesday, then trash service will be undisturbed on Monday and Tuesday. However pickup will be delayed one day for homes that normally receive trash service on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If a holiday falls on a weekend then normal trash pickup schedules remain unchanged.

For additional questions about trash pickup, contact your trash hauler.

City of Centerville

Trash service is provided by the city.

The City of Centerville normally collects trash and recyclables Monday through Thursday. The trash schedule is affected by seven holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

If your weekly scheduled pickup falls on, or follows, any of the above days, your refuse pickup will be delayed one day. In addition, if any of those holidays fall on a Sunday, crews will be off on Monday and collection will take place one day later than normal for the entire week.

For questions about trash pickup in the city, call 428-4782.
