General Information - Lessons

The purpose of the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program is to teach people to swim and to help them be safe when they are in, on, or around water. This unique six level program covers skills and knowledge in a logical progression for aquatic skill development. As participants develop these skills, they will become safer and better swimmers. It is important for the participant to have a sense of accomplishment for the skills that he or she did achieve and also to understand how to progress further whether the child remains in the same level or is ready for new challenges in the next level. In reality, people of similar ages obviously vary greatly in their body sizes, knowledge, skills, learning styles, personalities and experiences. They are only similar in rather general ways. Certified Water Safety Instructors must consider all these personal characteristics when determining a student's goals and development in the aquatic environment. Participants learn a variety of strokes, including the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. They are also introduced to a wide range of personal safety skills and diving techniques. Courses are fun and interactive with hands-on training. More advanced-level students refine their skills, learn the basics of springboard diving and discover how to incorporate swimming into a life fitness plan.

Swim Policy

Make sure your child is in the correct skill level. Children will not be transferred into another class level unless there is an opening ($10.00 transfer fee). Children will only be permitted in class levels that correspond to their skill level at the present time. If children have not been in a class recently, their skill level could have declined. Have them checked out on Evaluation Day for correct class placement. Should you register for the wrong class and there are no openings in the appropriate class that the student should be in, there will only be a 50% refund. Swim Evaluation does not register your child for swim class. Please refer to the registration schedule for the date and appropriate time that you may register your child. Fun With Me, Preschool I and Level I enrollees do not require an evaluation. Parents may enroll in appropriate class without the evaluation form.

Registration

  • A current class certificate or completed evaluation form may be requested at the first class meeting if there is a question about your child's placement by the instructor.
  • Class placement is determined by the child's grade level in the current school year. Preschoolers must be the correct age on 1st day of class and must be potty trained.
  • Participants may register for one class per session. (see Swim Policy.)

Waiting List Policy

Our goal is to service as many patrons as possible in all classes. When waiting list numbers indicate need, and instructor and space are available, our staff will add classes.

  • If you are registering on-line with Rec Trac and need to be placed on the waiting list, please follow the prompts.
  • Every attempt will be made to contact you at all phone numbers given. If we fail to reach you, or cannot leave a message, we will call the next available person.
  • After verbally committing to a class, patrons have 24 hours to reserve the class spot by paying in full. After 24 hours and no payment, name will be removed from potential class roster.
  • A $10.00 transfer fee will be assessed if transferring from a previously registered class if availability permits.
  • We do not transfer siblings or friends to the new class offered.
