William Sutter is Named Fire Marshal

The Washington Township Fire Department has promoted William Sutter, a fire inspector for 18 years, to the position of fire marshal in charge of the Division of Fire Safety.

In his new role, Sutter now oversees risk reduction efforts for the Centerville/Washington Township community, including fire safety inspections, plans review for new construction, fire investigation, and programs in prevention and safety that include school and community outreach and outdoor warning sirens.

SutterSutter has served as fire inspector since January 2000, conducting fire safety inspections and assisting with plans review, fire investigation, and other division duties. In March, he completed the process to earn the Fire Marshal (FM) credential from the Commission on Professional Credentialing, an entity of the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. The professional credential places him among an elite group of 114 fire marshals worldwide.

"Bill has been the guy behind the scenes doing the inspections for many years and in that role has dealt with the public and with public officials from the city and county level to the state," said Fire Chief Bill Gaul. "He's very knowledgeable, very experienced, and has an unflagging desire to keep the Centerville/Washington Township community safe."

During his time as fire inspector, Sutter received the Employee Award of Excellence and earned certification as a Fire and Explosives Investigator from the National Association of Fire Investigators. He is a member of the Southwest Ohio Fire Safety Council where he has served as treasurer for the past ten years, the Miami Valley Fire Investigators Association where he has been treasurer for the past three, and the Miami Valley Building Officials Council.

"It's very humbling to take on the role of fire marshal," said Sutter. "I've served the community for the last 20 years and it's become part of my family. As fire marshal, I'll do everything in my power to do whatever benefits our residents and the community as a whole." Sutter's other certifications include Fire Protection Inspector, conferred by the Ohio Board of Building Standards, and Fire Safety Inspector and Firefighter II certifications from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Prior to being hired as Fire Inspector, Sutter served the department as a part-time firefighter from 2007-2010 while also working as a full-time firefighter for the City of London, Ohio. A member of the US Air Force for nine years, Sutter held the rank of staff sergeant and served in a variety of roles for the USAF Fire Department, including captain, fire marshal, deputy chief, supply officer and training officer. He was deployed overseas twice during the first Gulf War, serving as second in command of base fire department operations during deployment and as liaison between the USAF Fire Department and local departments in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Sutter holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wright State University and an associate degree in fire science from the Community College of the Air Force.
