Government Center Offers a Drug Drop Off Box

Residents who want to safely dispose of old medications have a new option – a drug drop-off box at the Washington Township Government Center.

Located in the front lobby, the secure metal box can be used to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including narcotics, herbals and even veterinary medications. Needles, sharps containers and liquids are not accepted, however these can be taken to the township’s three annual Super Saturday events where all types of prescription and over-the-counter medications are accepted.

“These efforts help prevent medications from getting into the hands of children or into the waterways,” said Captain Mike Brem, township police director, who originated the program for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. “They also prevent people who enter your home from finding and abusing them.”

The lobby box can be used any time the Government Center is open, 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

The township also is offering a third drug disposal method for residents who cannot drop off medications on a regular basis. Free Medication Disposal Systems can be picked up at the Government Center lobby during open hours and later used at home to provide environmentally-friendly disposal of medications. The 5- by 10- inch purple packets can neutralize up to 45 pills, six ounces of liquid, or six patches.
