The Sizzle & Sparkle of Fireworks

FireworksFireworks add sizzle and sparkle to the Fourth of July, but they should always be left to the professionals.

"Setting off fireworks is illegal and unsafe. Only people who have received formal training should use them – ever," says Fire Marshal Mike Long of the Washington Township Fire Department. These strict conditions for fireworks are dictated by The Ohio Fire Code.

In 2013, fireworks resulted in eight deaths and an estimated 11,400 injuries. This is an increase from 8,700 injuries in 2012. Sixty-five percent, or 7,400, of the injuries in 2013 occurred in the 30 days surrounding July 4, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Even sparklers can burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees and can cause serious injuries if not used and disposed of carefully, Long said.

If you want to enjoy fireworks this summer, attend one of many professional displays, such as the Centerville/Washington Township Americana Festival, that are offered throughout the Miami Valley.
