New Resident Guide

New Resident Guide

Welcome to Washington Township!

We are the second largest township in the state of Ohio, encompassing 31 square miles while serving more than 62,000 residents.

Our mission is to provide for and promote the general health, safety, and welfare of Township residents and employees, and to create an environment focused on building for the future.

To do this, we provide vital local services. All of Washington Township – including residents and businesses located in the City of Centerville – benefit from fire, emergency medical, and recreation services. Those in the unincorporated area also receive services through the Township's public works, police, zoning, and development departments.

We invite you to explore the topics below or print a copy of the New Resident Guide (pdf, 4MB) to learn more about our services. If you have additional questions, please explore www.washingtontwp.org or call 937-433-0152.

Township 101

What Makes Us Stand Out?

Living in Washington Township offers many advantages for anyone seeking an amenity-rich suburban community. Here are just a few benefits: award-winning schools, accredited fire and police departments, green space within walking distance of every home, a mix of restaurants, coffee shops, and brewpubs, visual and performing arts programming, regional shopping centers, and access to major interstates leading to Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus.

Limited Self-Government

Washington Township is a “home rule” township, which gives the Board of Trustees the ability to enact resolutions (similar to city ordinances) provided they do not conflict with state laws or a list of specified exceptions. With Limited Self-Government, a township can continue to benefit from services – such as state highway maintenance, county road maintenance, and county building inspection – while enjoying the greater independence and self-determination that, prior to 1991, was granted only to cities.

Township Funding

Townships rely mostly on property tax, allowing voters to exercise considerable control over expenditures through local tax levies. In Ohio, townships do not have their own authority to collect income or sales tax.

Public Utilities & Transportation

Electricity

In 2023, Washington Township established an electric aggregation program for residents in the unincorporated part of the Township. By combining the buying power of Township homes and businesses, we can negotiate a lower price. Residents can opt out of the program if they prefer to choose their own supplier.

New residents are not automatically enrolled in the electric aggregation program. They will receive standard AES Ohio rates for electricity. Eligible new residents may join the aggregation program by contacting the Township's broker, Energy Alliances. The rate will be the same as the rate negotiated for the aggregation program.

Click here for more electric aggregation information, including frequently asked questions and opt-out options. Contact Energy Alliances at https://energyalliances.com/washington-township-montgomery or 513-794-5555.

Natural Gas

Columbia Gas of Ohio is the main natural gas distributor for Centerville-Washington Township. Ohio’s Energy Choice program allows residents to select a different retail natural gas supplier. Even with a different supplier, Columbia Gas continues to provide the infrastructure and delivery.

Note: Although the Township is certified for the natural gas aggregation program, we have not entered into an agreement for this type of aggregation. We are continuing to watch pricing and monitor the market.
