Identity Theft Education & Document Shredding

The township and sheriff's office have taken a proactive approach to identity theft. Periodic Super Saturday events offer residents the opportunity to dispose of sensitive documents and to learn about identity theft.

As always, a sheriff's deputy from the Washington Township Substation is on site to answer questions. Law enforcement experts recommend that people shred important documents such as invoices, bank statements, canceled checks, medical records and credit card receipts.

Up to 12 grocery-size bags will be accepted and may contain paper, data storage materials and credit cards. Documents will be securely shredded.

Examples of what ARE considered sensitive personal documents:

  • Tax returns
  • Mortgage applications/paperwork
  • Bank statements
  • Credit cards, social security information, drivers licenses or any photocopies
  • Credit reports
  • Medical records

Examples of items that ARE NOT considered sensitive personal documents:

  • Magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Greeting cards
  • Newspapers
  • Telephone books
  • Children's artwork
  • Wrapping paper
  • Business invitations

Items that are not considered sensitive, should be put in your trash recycle bin for weekly pick-up by your trash hauler.
