Child Safety Seat Inspections

The Washington Township Fire Department offers free child car seat inspections. The free inspections are a collaboration with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Centerville Police Department. Inspections are performed by SafeKids trained safety seat technicians who check the fit of both the seat in your vehicle and your child within the safety seat. Each inspection takes about 20 minutes. We ask that you bring the instruction manual for both the safety seat AND your vehicle. Call Fire Headquarters at 1-937-433-3083 to schedule your appointment.

Safety Seat Inspections on Super Saturday

Child safety seat inspections also are offered at Super Saturdays. Walk-ins are welcome and appointments are appreciated. You'll want to bring the instruction manual for both the safety seat and your vehicle. To schedule a time, email Scott Henry, education specialist, or call 1-937-438-2849. Free document shredding and free drug drop off also are offered on those days.

Smoke Alarms – What You Need to Know

smoke alarm reminderSmoke alarms are more effective – and more complicated – than they used to be.

For instance, they may be battery powered or hard-wired with a battery backup, stand alone or connected to each other. They may use photoelectric or ionization technology, or both. Maintenance and replacement needs can vary, too.

A brochure from the Southwest Ohio Fire Safety Council can help consumers navigate the selection, installation and maintenance of smoke alarms. Smoke alarms should placed, at a minimum, on every floor level, inside every sleeping room, and outside of every sleeping area. Choose smoke detectors that are wired and interconnected, or batter-powered units that communicate with each other so that when one detector alarms, they will sound throughout your home.

Experts recommend that home smoke alarms and batteries are checked monthly and replaced every ten years. Dust should be vacuumed from them on an annual basis.
